Remember when we cut the transom and reinforcement pieces? Now it's time to epoxy them together. With a jon boat or Thai longtail boat the transom is there the motor is mounted, unless you plan to mount it inboard.
The Thai longtail is my favorite motor design. It's simple, easy to work on, high performing, reliable, dependable and tough. The Thai longtail boat is a long, narrow flat-bottomed boats. This is the optimal hull design for this engine. The closest thing we have is a jon boat.
The Thai longtail boat motor some in every size you can imagine from 3 hp up to dump truck engines. However, the big kits are only available in Thailand, so we're limited to about 40 hp v-twin lawn mower engines here in the US.

The Thai longtail motor has gained a reputation for being hard to handle. This is because people come in with the wrong expectation or buy a cheap kit from a maker that doesn't know much about longtails.
Thai longtail mud motor kits: Get an SPS and leave the rest alone. They are better balanced, handle better and have far better customer support.
Thailand longtail come from a region in southeast Asia where rivers and canals are like streets and highways to us. So to have a coupler that can bolt to commonly available engines is a great way to get the masses on the water. Here in the US boat motors have gotten so expensive than even a 6 or 8 horsepower motor will set you back a couple grand, as opposed to $500 to $600 for a 6.5 hp Thai longtail.
