substance abuse disorder dsm 5 SAFE: CADCA's 2014 Dose of Prevention Award Winner

This video highlights the efforts of the Substance Abuse Free Environment, Inc. (SAFE), a CADCA-member coalition based in Chesterfield, Va. SAFE won CADCA's 2014 Dose of Prevention Award for their comprehensive approach to reducing the abuse of prescription drug and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines in their community. After discovering that OTC cough medicine abuse in their area was at levels significantly higher than the national average, SAFE disseminated educational materials to nearly 8,000 parents in their school district and educated their community about the dangers of abusing cough medicines containing dextromethorphan (DXM) through community forums and health fairs. During National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month, they also engaged teens from the SAFE coalition in a project to determine the ease of purchasing cough medicine. They also launched a media campaign and conducted prescriber education trainings for physicians and other healthcare providers.
